This September, Pope Francis will make his first trip to the United States for the 8th annual World Meeting of Families. This festival brings together tens of thousands of people to celebrate, discuss, and learn about their Catholic faith. Since this festival will be held in Philadelphia and for the first time in the United States, the Reading Public Museum decided to mount an exhibition to mark the historic occasion.

The works in this exhibit are primarily drawn from The Museum’s collection of sacred paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by Italian, Flemish, and Dutch artists. Some of the artists include Italian artists Domenico Michelino (1417-1491), Domenico di Zanobi (documented 1467-1481), Jacopo Tintoretto (1518/19-1594), Giovanni Dó (1604-1656), Corrado Giaquinto (1703-1766), as well as works by Northern European artists such as the Master of the Wettringen Altarpiece (active early 16th century) and the workshop of Joos van Cleve (1507-1540/1), among others, will be on display.

Some of the sacred subjects on view include: The Nativity of Christ, Raising of Lazarus, St. John the Baptist, Saints Peter and Paul, Virgin and Child, St. Lucy, a Sacra Conversazione, and the Lamentation.
