Realist painter and printmaker Jon Carsman (1944 – 1987), who was born in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, will be the focus of a works on paper exhibition at the Reading Public Museum from January 25 – May 10, 2020. The artist made a reputation for his dramatically colorful images of familiar suburban streets, Victorian architecture, gardens, and scenic country roads. This exhibition features more than thirty-five prints and watercolors from The Museum’s permanent collection.

Carsman came of age as an artist in in the late sixties, during a revival of Realism in American art. Influenced by Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, and Charles Burchfield, among others, Carsman’s paintings, screenprints, and watercolors balance strong contrasts of light and shadow, photographic naturalism, and intense colors. The artist remarked on his compositions saying, “I want to give you a feel of what it is like to be there when I was.” The artist conveys a rich sense of light, movement, and mood in each of his works, commenting on his landscapes, “I want, with these woodland scenes, to create certain phenomena that take place in nature. I want to paint wonderful pools of water with shimmering reflections.”
