NASA RELEASES THE FIRST IMAGES FROM THE JAMES WEBB SPACE TELESCOPE TO THE NEAG PLANETARIUM AT THE READING PUBLIC MUSEUM

The Foundation for the Reading Public Museum is pleased to announce its selection as a James Webb Space Telescope community events partner.

The public is invited to grab the most stellar seat in in town as The Reading Public Museum, in partnership with NASA, will be streaming the first images sent back to Earth from the James Webb Space Telescope LIVE at the Neag Planetarium.  This free public event will be held on July 12th at 10:30a.m. at the Neag Planetarium. Advanced  registration is required by emailing wendy.koller@readingpublicmuseum.org

The James Webb Space Telescope, also called Webb or JWST, is a large, space-based observatory, optimized for infrared wavelengths, which will complement and extend the discoveries of the Hubble Space Telescope. It will have longer wavelength coverage and greatly improved sensitivity. The longer wavelengths enable Webb to look further back in time to find the first galaxies that formed in the early Universe, and to peer inside dust clouds where stars and planetary systems are forming today.

Manager of STEM Education, Coleen Mikucki noted that, “The Reading Public Museum is thrilled to be able to present the first look at these once-in-a-lifetime images.  The contribution the Webb Space Telescope will make to human understanding of the formation of our universe is an exciting advancement for scientific discovery.”

The images will be resized to be viewed as a full dome experience and images will be compared with images released from the Hubble Space Telescope previously. Stay tuned for more information on the webiste to experience the images at the Neag Planetarium.
