VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES IN ARBORETUM ASSISTANTS PROGRAM

This spring, the Reading Public Museum will again team up with community volunteers in a program to help keep the Museum’s Arboretum a beautiful place to visit. In association with the Penn State Master Gardeners, the award-winning Arboretum Assistants Program gives volunteers the opportunity to train in gardening techniques while donating their time to help clean, plant and maintain the Arboretum. The dedication of these volunteers allows the continuing rehabilitation of the Museum grounds.

The Arboretum Assistants Program at the Reading Public Museum has received two awards, including a first place at the state level in the “Search in Excellence” among Master Gardener projects. Most recently, the Museum received the coveted PA Horticultural Society's 2007 Community Greenng award. The program was also awarded a Pennsylvania Urban and Community Forestry Council grant, which was used to train volunteers and to plant several new trees in the Arboretum.

Community members are invited to participate in the Arboretum Assistants Program. All assistants are trained by the Penn State Master Gardeners during March, and are asked to commit to three hours of work on at least twelve Wednesday mornings between April and October to work in the gardens.
