Take a fantastic journey into the world of the six simple tools used in everyday life in the new “Toolville” exhibition at the Reading Public Museum, June 3 through September 10, 2006. This hands-on exhibit is designed for children ages 5-12 and communicates the concept that tools help us work, play and solve problems. It also teaches that tools not only help us in the traditional familiar forms, but are also disguised as everyday objects.

We want to make learning about tools fun and express to children and visitors why tools are needed and how they work,” said Michael Feyers, Science Curator of the Museum. “We’re making the principles of tool use fun and interesting and encourage visitors to explore and invent with tools.
The exhibit takes the six simple tools (lever, wheel, inclined plane, screw, pulley and wedge) and places them in the fictional town of “Toolville,” complete with a Welcome Center, Toy Store, Central Park, Construction Site and Pier Six. Each of the five areas focuses on a different aspect of tools. The six simple tools are examined in a whimsical, yet scientifically accurate manner. Two cartoon mascots, Olive and Henry, act as “tour guides” through “Toolville.” Otters are among the few tool users in the animal world.
It's a wonderful exhibit for families to enjoy together with their kids. It’s very informative, and presents these principles in a fascinating, memorable and easy-to-understand manner,” said Feyers. “It proves science can be fun!
Ronald C. Roth, the Museum’s Director and CEO added, “We are committed to providing unique opportunities for youth to experience the wonders of science. It’s an integral part of our mission to be a dynamic center of lifelong learning.
Toolville is a traveling exhibit developed and built by the Children’s Museum of Memphis in conjunction with the Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative.
