March 3 - June 24, 2012
Our Works on Paper Gallery features works by contemporary painter and printmaker Jim Dine, which were recently donated to The Museum. The core exhibition includes 14 works from a complete portfolio of works published in 1988. The prints were inspired by ancient sculpture observed at Munich's Glyptothek. During the course of two summers — 1987 and 1988 — Dine created sketches of what he called, "my Glyptotek." In the series, the artist employed unusual croppings and energetic mark-making to create what he described as "a dance of carved stone." You can explore the artist's interesting engagement with an interpretation of the art of the past.
In addition to the Glyptotek portfolio, The Museum will display twelve more works on paper, eight of which are on loan from PACE Prints in New York, by Dine from the 1980s through 2010. These prints feature symbols like hearts, skulls, paintbrushes, Venuses, vegetables and robes, which the artist frequently employed.
