Born to be Wild - Adventures in the Art of Motorcycle Design
Art Family Programming

EXTENDED DATES!

For nearly a century, the motorcycle has been an icon for innovation in design and engineering. Perhaps more than any other form of transportation, it has come to symbolize the concept of freedom of movement for the individual, and this freedom has been an engine of creativity in design.

The challenge of balancing performance and advanced engineering innovation with quality design aesthetics has captured the imagination of both the commercial and independent motorcycle designers. The sheer beauty of the best designed motorcycles reminds us that motorcycle design is as much about the human spirit as speed and performance. It is about the edge of wildness that lurks within and that can break out with a motorcycle designed to liberate our wilder side.

This exhibition examines the art of the motorcycle through the lens of classic motorcycle design, new directions in custom designs, and choppers. In addition, a section of the exhibition will be devoted to some of the best examples of motorcycle painting.

Marshes: The Disappearing Edens
Art Science Family Programming

Few environments on earth pack in such living treasure as the marsh...yet it remains unknown, mysterious and concealing.

Now, after 30 years of prowling the marshes with big cameras, William Burt, photographer and writer for Smithsonian, Audubon, National Wildlife, and author of two distinguished books on birds, brings together the best of his work in this beautiful exhibition.

It's full of treasures and surprises, like the marsh itself. It includes 40 museum-quality prints, giving you glimpses of a world seldom seen or wandered.

RMF Concert Series - Letters, Lyrics and Love Songs
Performances Family Programming

Presented by the Reading Musical Foundation and Friends of the the Reading Museum, this concert continues the 2008-09 series with the group, Two Part Invention.

"Letters, Lyrics and Love Songs" is an interdisciplinary performance blending theater and music. In readings, monologues, and character sketches, Narrator Mark McKenna introduces music -- ranging from 17th century songs for lute to settings of contemporary poetry -- performed by flutist Nora Suggs, guitarist John Arnold, and soprano Patricia Koch Budlong.

Explore life, love, and loss in the words and music of Appalachian storytelling, modern poetry, and Elizabethan England; in a musical tribute to the memory of a friend; and in the internal music of a madhouse. Hear the sorrows of the American Civil War, and follow a joyous series of modern pets, misbehaving badly, and loving every minute of it!

Intertwining theater and music, "Letters, Lyrics and Love Songs" brings a new dimension to a concert performance, setting each musical selection firmly on a very personal and human stage.

Free, Auditorium.
