Chaperone's
Guide to A Great Visit
Thank you for accepting
the challenge of being
a group chaperone! We would
like to offer some useful
guidelines and suggestions
to help make your visit
a memorable one. We want
adults like yourself to
have the same rewarding
experience that the students
in your group have. Major responsibilities
of a chaperone include:
- Arriving
at the Museum 10 - 15 minutes early
- Bringing
your class into the Museum in an orderly
manner as you
check for name tags
- Separate
your class into your predetermined
groups
- Keeping
your group together at all times
- Resolving
any discipline issues that arise
- Escorting
students to the restroom
- Meeting
your docent and alerting him/her to
any special needs
Can a chaperone leave
their group?
- No.
Never leave your group unattended.
- If
you need to contact Security: for the Ground
Floor Security
is located
across from the
Admissions desk; for the First Floor
Security is located
at the back door of the Museum
(behind the stair
case).
What can a chaperone do
to help students understand
proper museum behavior?
- Ensure
that students walk, not run; use the stairs
properly; treat others
with respect
- REMEMBER
- No food, drinks, or gum should be brought
into the Museum.
- Students
should not bring backpacks on the trip.
Backpacks will
not be allowed into the building and need
to be left on
the bus.
- No
flash cameras in the Museum at any time!
- Stay
with your group at all times, as it is for
their safety
and the safety
of others.
- Focus
your students on the educational purpose
of their
visit by asking them questions and getting
them involved.
Challenge
them to
think about what they are seeing!
- Please
do not allow students to throw money into
open
vases.
No hands in the fountain or on any of the
objects
in the galleries.
Some final tips for a
successful visit:
- Know
how many children are in your group and learn
their names
- Do
a head count from time to time, especially
when
moving from floor
to floor
- Plan
your group's stop at the Museum Shop for
the end of your
visit-remember that you will need two
chaperones for
every ten students when in the shop.
- Notify
Lori Irwin when booking your visit that
you wish to
stop at the Museum Shop so that our
staff will
be able to serve you better.
Enjoy your visit! We invite
you to return and experience
more of the Museum!
