Lenape: The Original People
| |
This exhibition -- a unique educational collaboration with educator Dr. James Delle and 16 students from Kutztown University -- features "Archeology in Berks" as a theme to explore the rich history of the Lenape. Using artifacts from the Museum's permanent collection (many found by the Museum's second Director, Earl Lincoln Poole), you will learn about Lenape culture and westward migration after European contact, North American Indian "hotspots" within Berks County, styles of projectile points, historical changes in subsistence, and models of Lenape life, showing tools and objects "in use."
The Lenape or Lenni-Lenape (later named Delaware Indians by Europeans) were, in the 17th century, organized bands of North American Indian peoples who shared cultural and linguistic characteristics. They are the first people the Europeans met when they first set foot on what is now the United States.

Offspring of the Winds - The Horse in Art and Imagination
| |
This exhibition will feature the horse as it has appeared in diverse cultures over the past 3,000 years. With works drawn primarily from the Museum's permanent collections, visitors will experience the beauty, strength and vitality that the horse has inspired in the work of artists and craftsmen throughout history.
Highlights of the exhibition include spectacular 7th to 4th-century B.C. Greek vases depicting the horse in battle, mythology and every day life of the ancients, Asian masterpieces including Ming and Yuan dynasty scroll paintings and rare ivory and jade sculptures. A special feature of the exhibition is the Museums unique collection of Renaissance armor for the horse, one of the most outstanding in the United States.
The display will also include whimsical recreational uses of the horse including folk art, carousel horses and cast iron horse-drawn fire engine toys. Paintings in the exhibition will include the famous Napoleon Crossing the Alps from the studio of Jacques Louis David and an extremely rare Sioux. A special Berks Collects section will feature an array of decorative arts from weathervanes to hobby horses loaned from local private collections.
This exhibition is presented by Penn National Gaming, Inc. and Susquehanna Bank.

Born to be Wild - Adventures in the Art of Motorcycle Design
| |
For nearly a century, the motorcycle has been an icon for innovation in design and engineering. Perhaps more than any other form of transportation, it has come to symbolize the concept of freedom of movement for the individual, and this freedom has been an engine of creativity in design.
The challenge of balancing performance and advanced engineering innovation with quality design aesthetics has captured the imagination of both the commercial and independent motorcycle designers. The sheer beauty of the best designed motorcycles reminds us that motorcycle design is as much about the human spirit as speed and performance. It is about the edge of wildness that lurks within and that can break out with a motorcycle designed to liberate our wilder side.
This exhibition will examine the art of the motorcycle through the lens of classic motorcycle design, new directions in custom designs, and choppers. In addition, a section of the exhibition will be devoted to some of the best examples of motorcycle painting.
