Sunday, March 30 - The Bridge

The Bridge String Quartet brings new and innovative arrangements of jazz, rock, and Latin, as well as other popular forms of music for string quartet. They are continually reaching out to more modern forms of string quartet playing and have collaborated on a number of projects with other musicians, including jazz violinist John Blake Jr. and locals Josh Taylor, John Rozum and Rich Tomrell. Consisting of Brad Richards (violin), Robert Merkley (violin), Jessica Godek (viola) and Lisa Sharer (cello), this talented quartet of locally-based musicians is the perfect group to start off the first full week of the 18th annual VF Outlet Berks Jazz Fest!

Brad Richards performs with The Bridge String Quartet as a violinist. He resides in the Reading area, performing both as a violinist and violist. He currently performs with the Reading Pops and Dave Stahl Sacred Orchestra. In addition to his orchestral playing, Brad enjoys playing jazz with other local musicians. Among his teachers are John Blake, Jr., Stanley Chepaitis and Ken Gehret. He continues to expand his musical interest in alternative styles, winning 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in local fiddle contests.

Robert Merkley directs the Boyertown Area Junior and Senior High School Orchestras. He is currently a member of the Pottstown Symphony and Reading Pops Orchestra. He has also performed with the Allentown Symphony and Lehigh Valley Chamber Orchestra. Since college, Bob has been a performer, adjucidator and conductor in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Ontario, Canada. he enjoys playing music of all styles.

Jessica Godek directs the string program at Wyomissing Area School District. There, she teaches at the elementary, middle and high school orchestras and lessons. Currently, Jessica directs a local church choir in the Reading area and performs with the Reading Pops Orchestra on viola.

Performing on cello, Lisa Sharer is the newest addition to the Bridge. Ms. Sharer received her master’s degree from Florida State University and her bachelor’s degree from West Chester University; both in music education. Ms. Sharer held a position as adjunct applied cello instructor at Albright College in Reading, PA. Additionally, she has served in the position of Orchestra Vice President for the Music Educators of Berks County (PA) and is the immediate past president of the Maryland Orchestra Director’s Association. Ms. Sharer has served as an educator clinician, adjudicator and guest conductor in Florida, Georgia, Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
