The Greatest Bird Artists: John James Audubon and Earl Poole
| |
This mini-exhibition includes work from the Museum's permanent collection, by two of America's greatest wildlife artists, John James Audubon and Earl Lincoln Poole.
Audubon's publication, Birds of America, remains one of the unsurpassed achievements in American art. From 1826 to 1838, he published over 1,000 lifesized portraits of 435 species of birds, engraved and hand colored on sheets approximately two by three feet. Four of these prints were purchased by the Museum in 1952 by Earl Lincoln Poole, himself a noted wildlife artist and naturalist, as well as the second Director of the Museum.
Poole was a leading orinthologist artist notable for his mastery of accurate anatomical details. The exhibit also features works by Poole using a variety of media, including watercolor and oil.

Lenape: The Original People
| |
This exhibition -- a unique educational collaboration with educator Dr. James Delle and 16 students from Kutztown University -- will feature "Archeology in Berks" as a theme to explore the rich history of the Lenape. Using artifacts from the Museum's permanent collection (many found by the Museum's second Director, Earl Lincoln Poole), you will learn about Lenape culture and westward migration after European contact, North American Indian "hotspots" within Berks County, styles of projectile points, historical changes in subsistence, and models of Lenape life, showing tools and objects "in use."
The Lenape or Lenni-Lenape (later named Delaware Indians by Europeans) were, in the 17th century, organized bands of North American Indian peoples who shared cultural and linguistic characteristics. They are the first people the Europeans met when they first set foot on what is now the United States.
